Hernando County was establish on February 27, 1843 and is located approximately 50 north west of Tampa, Florida. Brooksville is the Capital city. Hernando county is home to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge which feature beautiful warm water springs and have become a safe place for manatee populations which migrate to the area every winter as well as, according to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, "...is home to over 250 species of birds, over 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, and at least 25 different species of mammals, including the endangered West Indian Manatee" http://www.fws.gov/chassahowitzka/.
